Casares
village and its seaside community 'Baja de Casares' provide
a quiet environment for those wishing to relax with beach, harbour
or mountain walks.
The nightlife of Estepona and Marbella are only a short distance
away.
The delightful
port and marina of Duquesa, with its restaurants and coastal walks
is a 5 minute drive, as is Sabinillas - a small town with a beautiful
family-friendly beach. To explore further you could take a hovercraft
to Morocco or go on a trip out of Duquesa to see dolphins.
You can find watersports in the area, including scuba diving and
water parks.
The town of Casares hangs from a cliff in the Sierra Bermeja at
an altitude of 435m above sea level. It is often termed as a hanging
village.
This unique location is complemented with a picturesque and intricate
network of steep streets, where cheerful houses with interesting
designs stand several storeys high on the side of the gorge. At
the top of the town is an Arab castle where the views are spectacular
and rightly so casarses was declared a site of historic Artistic
interest in 1978, and forms part of the famous white villages of
Malaga.
Other places of noticeable interest are the Roman-Moorish Baths
of La Hedionda, where Julio Cesar was said to have being cured,
The Ibero-Roman fortress of Lacipo, dating from the 5th or 6th century
B.C. and whose remains are preserved in different parts of the municipality
and the Church of the Encarnacion.
Among the most representative dishes is the rabbit cooked in various
ways. In the winter they have soup made with bread and oil, porridge,
and potato stew. In the summer the casares people have their own
form of “Gazpachyo” soup and they have their own white
wine obtained from their vines.
Casares is just the right place to enjoy the Mediterranean sea,
Andalusian sun and the mountain scenery. Hand Gliding is a popular
sport here as well as mountain climbing and trekking. Casares also
offers excellent beaches and luxury boutiques. The narrow streets
weave and climb from the village square with inviting bodegas and
tapas bars ideally situated to take in the idyllic location.
The village is only 10 minutes drive inland from the wide sandy
expanses of Casares Bay, with many of the beaches designated Blue
Flag areas. With Estepona just a short drive away, the Casares area
offers beautiful scenery, miles of unspoilt beaches and excellent
cuisine.
There is plenty of parking on the outskirts of the village, but
be ready to climb, the narrow streets weave and climb surrounding
the central plaza with its small bars and central fountain.
Keep climbing and eventually you will have reached the top of the
town of some 1,400 feet above sea level. There is an old fortress
here and a derelict church, as well as a marvellous view.
Watch for peregrine falcons and kestrels and, on a clear day, you
will be able to spy the African coast with the Rock of Gibraltar
looming craggily in the foreground.
